SINGABLES

     Singables are books that are used to connect music to text.  These types of books help children learn about all aspects of print and gain knowlegde of how language works. Using repetitive words,rhymes,and rhythm in a singable
assists a child in becoming a reader. 

     We use familiar tunes with our own original lyrics. For example we use "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and create lyrics for a song about a butterfly or piggies!

     Current brain research supports the connection between music and early literacy learning.  For years, nursery rhymes have been used to teach early literacy and rhyming skills. Young children still enjoy nursery rhymes, poems, and chants that help them acquire pre-reading skills, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, oral lanugage development, and fluency.  All these lay the foundation for reading. 

     Parents and educators have instinctively known the importance of music in a primary literacy program.  They use engaging songs, poems and fingerplays in a child's early language development.  Television shows such as Barney, Sesame Street and Between the Lions integrate music and reading to the delight of their young viewers.

     Singables are used to acquire and practice beginning reading skills. Children love singing them over and over again.  By presenting the text, they learn to visually track and start to recognize sight words.  Preschool, Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers know the importance of Shared Reading.  Singables are great for Shared Reading!

     The majority of our books are singables and poems that children love reading again and again.  Many of the books encourage active participation with movement and body actions to deepen the learner's comprehension and interest.

     Acquiring English as a second language can be a challenge for anyone!  Young children who are learning English need many opportunities to hear, sing, and see print.  They need to be actively engaged with oral language. Singables are an effective tool in supporting English Language development.
