It’s getting close to Thanksgiving and there is a lot of excitement in school! Kids are tracing hand turkeys and gluing on feathers with words of things they are thankful for! We LOVE to sing Thanksgiving songs and have written several. One of our favorites is “Five Little Turkeys”, Watch the movie here and share it with your students.
The product comes with 6 stick puppets and a really fun Literacy Center game called “Tricky Turkeys”. It has EDITABLE cards so ANY words or math facts or WHATEVER can be added to the cards. You can make a game that helps your students practice exactly what they need at this time of the year. Click FIVE LITTLE TURKEYS to link to the product page at our TeachersPayTeachers store.
Stick puppets help students retell a story or song. Even the shyest will get up in front of the class if they are holding a puppet. They may not say or sing anything in the beginning but holding that puppet gives them a purpose. After having lots of opportunities using different puppets throughout the year, the quiet ones gain confidence and will start to raise their hands to be first to use a new set! They will eventually even perform for another class or their families.
There are standards for speaking and also performance arts that are easily addressed using songs and stick puppets. Students develop their oral language skills when performing a familiar story.
Here’s a recent comment from a teacher who has been using “Five Little Turkeys” with her students: “Fun activity for my preK students. Great for generating expressive language! Love it!”
